CFC Issue Brief Exploring US-Canada Trade Now Available

A new CFC issue brief, “Crossing the Borders: An Overview of US-Canada Trade,” which explores the U.S.-Canada trade relationship and key supply chains relevant to electric cooperatives and their members, is now available as a PDF download on the CFC Member Website.

Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving U.S. tariff landscape, trade relations between the United States and its neighbors have become more uncertain. The United States and Canada not only share the longest border in the world, the two countries maintain one of the most robust bilateral trade relationships globally, thanks to large volumes of trade in energy, agricultural goods and automotive products.

A key focus of the issue brief is how central the U.S.-Canada trade relationship is to America’s electric utility industry. The industry relies on imports from Canada for transformers, components and inputs to build U.S. grid infrastructure. On the power supply side, the industry has also benefited from imports of Canada’s low-cost, reliable electricity.

The issue brief also examines agricultural trade and the factors that have led to rising levels of imports from Canada since 2020.

To learn even more about this important topic, CFC members can listen to the podcast, “Crossing the Borders: US–Canada Trade.” In the podcast, CFC Senior Energy Analyst Alisha Pinto shares her thoughts on how critical the U.S.-Canada trade relationship is to the current and future development of the electric utility industry.
